Posting Introduction

Can you declare a language that does not have any grammatical, phonetical, or morphological connection with any and all members of the Indo-European family to be an Indo-European language? Can you declare a language that has only a sprinкle of the occupier or Lingua Franca language to be that language? One can, if he operates in the Stalinist Russia and is doing a Stalinist science. But what you would do when the dictator is gone, a sembalance of fresh air blows around you, but you spent 40 years proving the unprovable? Would you rescind your 40 years worth of muddying around, if you are an honest man, and admit that you were forced into slave performance? Or like Vasiliy Ivanovich Abaev (who in reality is no Vasiliy, no Ivanovich, and even not Abaev, but that is a separate story) continue pushing pseudo-science and insist on life-long fabrication? Abaev did just that, fooling uncountable masses and not a few scholars. A whole Scytho-Iranian theory is supported by the work the most debilitating excerpts of which are laid out below for public view.

In fact, the Ossetian is better then a half Nakh, and the 10% of the Iranian loanwords are adopted in accordance with the Nakh phonology. No Swadesh list study of the Ossetian was ever published, for a good reason. (Thanks to Wikipedia, we finally have the Swadesh list http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:Ossetian_Swadesh_list, but its study is still wanting) The Abaev's book had never been translated into English, also for a good reason, even though it is a most cited and referred to study used for justification of Irano-linguality of the Scythian people. Any foreign expert referring to it must have read only a translation of the "Conclusion", completely missing the confounding and enlightening substance of the linguistic contents. Not only the  "Conclusion" is unsupported by evidence, but it is just not reconcilable with the evidence Abaev himself is presenting. Every linguistic category analyzed by Abaev terminates with his unambiguous conclusion that not only it is not compatible with the Iranian, it does not even belong to the Indo-European family at large.

Another dimention is the fact which all Ossetiono-Scythologists glide through. Imagine the headlines:

- Brits moved to Australia, and adopted the name "Aborigines", and started to call the aborigines "Brits", and started to call each other "Aborigine", and started to be called by the name "Aborigine" by their former aborigine neighbors. Wow!! And the aborigine neighbors started to call themselves and each other "Brit".
- Dutch moved to America, and adopted the name "Indians", and started to call the Indians "Dutch", and started to call each other "Indians", and started to be called by the name "Indian" by their former Indian neighbors. Wow!! And the Indian neighbors started to call themselves and each other "Dutch".
- Germans moved to Africa, and adopted the name "Zulu", and started to call the Зулу "Germans", and started to call each other "Zulu", and started to be called by the name "Zulu" by their former Zulu neighbors. Wow!! And the Zulu neighbors started to call themselves and each other "Germans".
-Balkarians and Karachais moved to Caucasus, and adopted the name "Alans and Ases", and started to call the Alans and Ases "Ossetians", and started to call themselves and each other "Alans and Ases", and started to be called by the name "Alans and Ases" by their neighbors. Wow!! And Alans and Ases started to call each other "Ossetian".
- Chinese moved to Malaysia, and adopted the name "Malaysians", and started to call the aborigines "Chinese", and started to call each other "Malaysian", and started to be called by the name "Malaysian" by their former Malaysian neighbors. Wow!! And the Malaysians started to call themselves and each other  "Chinese"
 - Indians moved to Ceilon, and adopted the name "Tamils", and started to call the Tamils "Indians", and started to call each other "Tamils", and started to be called by the name "Tamils" by their former Tamil neighbors. Wow!! And the Tamil neighbors started to call themselves and each other "Indian".

We can go on. We can take a World Atlas, and compose an example for every tribe listed there. Japanese and Russians moved to Sakhalin and adopted the name "Ainu", while Ainu adopted the names "Japanese" and "Russians" respectively. Wow!!
- Italians moved to Ethiopia, became Ethiopians, and Ethiopians became Italians. Romans moved to Judea, and became Jews, and Jews became Romans. Wow!! Russians moved to Tataria and adopted the name "Tatar", while Tatars adopted the name "Russian". Wow!! French moved to Canada, and became Eskimo, and Eskimo became French. Wow!! You move to a stable, and become a horse, and the horse becomes your older you. Wow!!

OK, these are just fake headlines, but in Scytho-Iranian hypothesis the Balkar-Karachai scenario is real and a major link in the chain of arguments. Balkar-Karachais do call themselves Alans and Ases, all their neighbors, including Ossetes,  call them Alans and Ases, and nobody calls Ossetes Alans and Ases, including the Ossetes themselves. Wow!! This unreal scenario is implicitly or explicitly accepted by all "mainstream" and august scholars. Anybody else is looking for a Brookline bridge to buy?

All boldface highlighting was added in this posting.

The Vasiliy Ivanovich (V.I.) Abaev book, Osetinskiy yazyk i folklor - Ossetian Language and Folklore, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow-Leningrad,  1949, is the foundation of the Scythian-Iranian theory, which stipulates that Scythians spoke an Iranian dialect.

The book was published in 1949, after the 1944 Decree of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (bolsheviks) of the USSR to re-write "the history to exclude the Tatar period from the history of the Russian statehood and ensure the 'un-interruptibility of the history of Rossiia' ", and after the 1944 infamous deportations of the native non-Indo-European peoples from the Crimea and Caucasus. In the book was the academic proof of the "un-interruptibility" of the Indo-European occupation of the "South Russian steppes". The non-Indo-Europeans were newcomers and transients. The concept was supported by the authoritative publications of all convergent disciplines of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

The Scythian-Iranian theory follows the logic: Ossetians speak the Northern branch of the Iranian language, Ossetians are Alans, Alans are Sarmatian tribe, Sarmatians are akin to Scythians, hence Scythians were Ossetian speaking, hence linguistically the Scythians belonged to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European family of languages. A brilliant logic that, in the words of  V.I. Abaev, "ends the light-weighted and irresponsible speculations on Scythian material which do not have anything common with science" (page 148). It is well known what fate in the  Stalin's times met the people that pursued irresponsible speculations which do not have anything common with science. There were no peer reviews and no opposition to the book. The theory was unanimously accepted and voted "yes" by every surviving Soviet scientist. The dissenters were not eligible to survive.

The book is heavy on declarative orthodox statements linking the generic Ossetian with "Scythian". The Ossetian-Scythian association is not separated into the Ironian and Digorian links, even though these dialects have distinct histories evidenced by the specifics of these languages. But, being a prominent scientist, V.I. Abaev had to address the real properties of the Ossetian language. And what Abaev states with a tongue in cheek in the introduction portions throughout his work on the politically correct Iranian genesis of the Ossetian language, is grossly contradicted by his analysis of the Ossetian language in the body of his book.

The citations below provide the excerpts from the Abaev's book showing:

- that Abaev clearly understood the cardinal differences between the Flexitive Indo-European and Agglutinative types of languages.
- that unlike the Flexitive Indo-European or Afro-Asiatic language families,  the Ossetian is an Agglutinative language and belongs to an Agglutinating language family.
- that there are insurmountable differences between the Ossetic and Indo-European type of languages in any category of the linguistic property analyzed: phonetics, morphology, lexicon, semantics, or syntax, .
- that Ossetian is no closer to the Indo-European or Iranian than any other language with a layer of the 20% admixture of the Indo-European vocabulary.
- that unlike the literate Alans and Bulgars who left masses of written materials, Ossetians did not have a culture of writing until the 19th century (?) and, since Alans were literate, the Ossetes must be the only people in the world which, per Abaev, lost their literacy.

There are other factors honestly illuminated by V.I. Abaev with profound impacts on the Ossetian-Alanian-Scythian-Iranian theory:

Ironian-Digorian relationship: V.I.Abaev casually refers to the one which is handier to use at the time. This allows the use of essentially two (2) languages. The Ironian and Digorian lexically differ as much as 25% in their vocabulary (900 out of 4,000 roots). This is more than, say,  English and Portuguese from the respective Germanic and Romanic branches of the Indo-European family. And, notes Abaev, these differences belong to the different Caucasian substrates of the Ossetian language, not to its Indo-European layer. (This observation of Abaev is corroborated by genetic analysis which shows unrelated origin of Digors and Irons)

Even the first researchers who visited Ossetia at the end of the 18th and the beginning of 19th c. noted that the Ossets, having much in common with the neighboring Caucasian peoples in appearance, clothes, way of life, psychology and customs, considerably differ from them in language. A closer study of the Ossetian language opened an interesting and somewhat unexpected fact: the Ossets turned out related by the language not to the Caucasus (Japhetic) peoples as Chechens, Kabardinians, Abkhazes, Georgians, Dagestanis, not Türkic, as Balkars, Karachais, Kumyks, Azerbaijanis, but to the peoples of Europe, Iran and India, peoples of the so-called Indo-European family.

...(Ossetian) nation till the 19th century did not have a developed writing or a written historical tradition...
(This is a flat and demeaning misrepresentation invented by state during Soviet time: Hundreds of inscriptions were documented in the "Alanian" lands between Causasus and Volga-Don interfluve, written in runiform script; the Ossetes were for centuries associated with Georgia and used Georgian script until ordered to abandon it.)

Qualifications by Abaev

In the present work, designed for the broad reader audience, we cannot delve in all the comparative - linguistic material by which the attribution of the Ossetian language to the Iranian group of the Indo-European family is established. Understanding this material demands some special preparation. Those  interested can address the mentioned works of Vs. Miller. Here we shall note only that the place a given language occupies among other related languages is determined by rather exact methods of comparative linguistics. The relationship is determined not by a casual similarity of separate words or forms, but the whole system of conformity laws covering all structures of the compared languages: phonetics, morphology, lexicon, semantics, syntax. The phonetic, i.e. the sound, concurrence usually has especial consistency and conformity, the strength of the consistency is noted with the name "sound laws". Knowing the sound laws that determine the correspondence between several related languages, we, on the basis of the given form in one language, can frequently guess how this word should sound in the other language. Thus, knowing that the Ancient Iranian sound p in the initial position corresponds the sound f in the Ossetian language, we can assert with confidence, that Ancient Iranian patha 'стрела' should give fat in Ossetian, Ancient Iranian pada 'leg' - Os. fad, Ancient Iranian pathana 'wide' - Os. fǽtǽn, etc.
Identically, knowing the phonetic feature in the Ossetian, where the sound r in group of two consonants moves from the second place to the first, we accept, logically, that the Ancient Iranian Pbrata 'brother' gives in Ossetian ǽrvad, Ancient Iranian abra 'cloud' - Os. arv 'sky', Ancient Iranian traya 'three' - Os. ǽrtǽ, Ancient Iranian dru 'hair' - Os. ǽrdu, Ancient Iranian druna 'bow' - Os. ǽrdunǽ, Ancient Iranian udra 'otter'- Os. urd, etc.

These transformation rules, considered historically, reflect the rules of change which, during a historical life of a language, undergo sounds and words . These changes of the same words in two related languages can diverge in appearance quite far apart from each other and the prototype; so, that only the linguistic analysis is able to establish their initial unity. Therefore to judge the relationship of two languages based only on the external similarity of some words is risky and can lead to sad mistakes.

Important is not the impression of the external similarity of the sound, but that the sound relations in the compared words correspond with the sound laws established for these languages. So, it is possible to prove with mathematical accuracy, that Ossetian zǽrdǽ 'heart' and Persian dil 'heart', or Latin equus and Greek εππος 'horse' are the same word by origin. Whereas, say, English bad, 'bad' and Persian bad 'bad' have, evidently, nothing in common between them.

The Ossetian language territorially for a long time has been separated from the Iranian world, occupies in it a unique place and, by many attributes, is contrary to all the new Iranian languages....
(Is not it ridiculous to state that Ossetes speaking Alanian-Sarmatian-Scythian were separated from the Iranian world, when Central Asian Sarmatians and Saka-Scythians are at the same time claimed to be a part of the same  Iranian world? Is that argumentation any more than a disingenuous verbal equilibristics?)

5. BRIEFLY OF PHONETICS, MORPHOLOGY AND WORD FORMATION

Clearly, the characteristics of the language are not exhausted by its lexicon. Not a lesser interest from the point of view of the origin of language is its phonetics, morphology, syntax. We cannot enter here into the detailed consideration of these properties of the language, as they have a more special character. We shall note some facts laying on the surface whose value can be appreciated by a layman.

The Indo-European languages are characterized by quite a small number of phonemes. In Latin, for example, there are only 21 phonemes. On the contrary, the Caucasian (Japhetic) startle with the plethora of phonems. In some Abkhazian dialects the number of phonemes reaches 80. The Ossetian language with the 32 - 35 phonemes occupy an intermediate position between the Indo-European and Caucasian world. The Ossetian language phonetically comes most of all close to the Georgian and Armenian languages. ... (I.e. there is absolutely nothing Iranian)

...the nature of these sounds, as testified both in the acoustical perception, and the experimental data, during the long historical relations, converged with the sounds of the neighboring Caucasian languages. To the Caucasian influence should be attributed the occurrence in the Ossetian of the so-called stopped-guttural consonants: k’, р', t', c ’, č ’. The rear labial q could be acquired from the Northern Türkic languages. For the Indo-European languages these phonemes are alien. (I.e. again there is absolutely nothing Iranian)

TO CHARACTERISTICS OF MODERN OSSETIAN LANGUAGE

The Ossets, more than any of mountain tribes of the Caucasus, attracted and draw the attention of the scientific world. The literature on Ossets, ethnographic, historical-archeological and linguistic, is rather significant and includes the works belonging to the pen of the most prominent scientists both Russian, and foreign.

Interest to Ossets especially increased when the presence of a significant and well preserved 'Iranian layer' in their language was established (mainly by the works of Vs. Miller). Now it is considered a conventional fact that the Ossets are a Caucasus splinter of the Northern group of the Iranian peoples, that in the past they lived in S. Russian steppes and in the Kuban area, and that under the name of Alans, mentioned by the Middle Age writers, mainly lived the ancestors of the Ossets. Thus the Ossetian problem buttresses the Scythian-Sarmatian problem.

At the same time the presence of the Iranian influences in the Finnish and Hungarian languages also draws to the Ossetian language the attention of the Ural-Altaic experts. Lastly, in the Caucasus the Ossets are connected by a network of complex and various mutual relations with the surrounding Japhetic tribes, even though the relationships were not studied yet, so that a Caucasolog also cannot pass by this people indifferently.

Thus the Ossetian people and language appear in the center knot for a lot of problems each one undoubtedly representing a deep interest.

The unquestionable achievement of the earlier reasearchers-Osetinologists, led by Vs. Miller, was the establishment and identification of the Iranian elements in the Ossetian, and a number of the most interesting conclusions of the cultural - historical order which have been made based on these studies. But it shall be recognized that the study of all non-Iranian in the Ossetian is in an embryonic state. Meanwhile, the scope and the importance of this non-Iranian both in the language and in folklore the Ossets cannot be hidden from any researcher with the most superficial acquaintance. In the other place we wrote: "The Iranism of the Ossetian language taken as its basis on one hand, and the strong alien influences in it, on another hand, are two facts equally indisputable and important, and it is difficult to tell, the neglect of which of them can lead to more sad consequences".

In the history of the study of the Ossetian language are three basic periods. The first, connected with the names of Güldenshtet, Pallas, Klaport, etc., is the period of the preliminary travel notes without serious scientific value. The second period, descriptive-grammatical, is marked first of all by the big work of A.Shegren. The third, connected mainly with the name of Vs.Miller, could be called Indo-European or Iranistic, as the Ossetian language during this period of its study served mainly as object of the Indo-European, and in particular the Iranian, inferences and comparisons. Now the study of the Ossetian language should enter a new, fourth stage in which the Ossetian language will be examined, as a whole, as an alive system, with a due recognition of the equivalence of all of its elements, and considering the ethnic and linguistic environment in which it existed in the Caucasus during all accessible to our view history.

This article aims to attract attention to the number of facts in the Ossetian language which, because of the impossibility to connect them with the facts of the Iranian, Aryan or Indo-European, were until now left out  from the circle of attention of the traditional linguistic school, and remained poorly or not at all addressed. This article, thus, attempts to provide some information in the transition to that new stage of the study of the Ossetian language discussed above. (I.e. again there is absolutely nothing Iranian)

Phonetics

At the first sight at the system of sounds of the Ossetian language is evident a huge similarity of this system to the phonetic system of the neighboring Japhetic languages, in particular S. Caucasian. When the founder of scientific study of Ossetian language Acad. Shegren, composing for the Ossets a new alphabet, chose the Russian letters, he made it not because he found the Russian alphabet the most suitable for this purpose, but mainly, considering the "future destiny of the Ossetians", and also their greater pre-disposition to the Russian font in comparison with Georgian. But at the same time he saw clearly the advantages of the Georgian alphabet for the full and adequate presentation of the Ossetian sounds. Confirming it, he correctly referred to the example of Yalguzidze who, using the Georgian alphabet for the Ossetian books, added only three new letters lacking in the Georgian alphabet.

...Vs. Miller considers the Ossetian aspirants close to the N. German and Russian, though he had to recognize that Ossets frequently code the Russian explosive consonants in the loan-words from Russian not through aspirants, but through stopped voiced letters.

Thus, on one hand we have inconsistent and doubtful identification of the Ossetian voiceless explosives with the Russian and German, and on another, the doubtless and obvious affinity, if not identity, of these consonants with the corresponding consonants of the Caucasian Japhetic languages. Hardly it is possible to doubt, that though the phonetic resemblance between the Ossetian and some other European languages may be interesting, the fact of the concurrence of the whole system of the Ossetian consonantism with the consonantism of the Caucasian group of languages is incomparably more important and instructive. The fact does not change because in the Iranian words the Ossetian consonants naturally correspond to the certain Iranian consonants: this does not make the Ossetian sounds "Iranian" or "European"; the fact is that the Ossetian, as well as Armenian, simply builds the "Indo-European" words from the Caucasian phonetic material.

...Ossetian has not three rows of explosive consonants as thought until recently, but four:

Voiced,
Voiceless aspirated,
stopped-guttural,
Voiceless non-aspirated.

Exactly the same system we find in the number of the Dagestani languages: Lak, Lezghin.

Even Vs. Miller had to note that stopped-guttural k is not only in the  "loanwords" from the Caucasian languages, but "penetrated into purely Ossetian words". Leaving under doubt the scientific validity of division of the elements of language into the "pure" and "non-pure", we should recognize that, in fact, a significant number of the Ossetian words with well established Iranian and Indo-European matches, has the "Caucasian" stopped-guttural consonants instead of the expected, also "Caucasian", however, aspirants.

Again and again, from the different angles, we witness that the correct presentation of the Ossetian phonetics cannot be made while ignoring the Caucasian-Japhetic phonetic facts, and the attempt to reduce it all to the "Indo-European" can cause only that a number of the most interesting phenomena would end up outside of the sphere of the scientific research. (I.e. again there is absolutely nothing Iranian)

Morphology

Anywhere perhaps, the duality of Ossetian language does not show as brightly, as in morphology; we have in it a verb system close to other Iranian languages but with the alien to the all Iranian world fully developed agglutinating declination.

То circumstance, that instead of the flective Ancient Iranian (and respectively Indo-European) system of declination we find in the Ossetian the agglutinating declination, similar to the neighboring Caucasian languages of the Kartvelian and Eastern Mountaineer groups, cannot be explained by an accident. While other new Iranian languages lost the old nominal flection, lost together with it the declination, the Ossetian from its own Iranian elements has developed a new system of case endings and the new declination of the declination type in the agglutinating languages: Turkic, Finno-Ugrian, some Caucasian. ...

In Ossetian we find the following cases:
1)Nominative...
2)Genitive...
3)Dative...
4)Instrumentalis and ablativus....
б) Directional...
6)Local internal...
7)Local external...
8)Cosiativus, comitativus...
9)Similaritive...

The impression of affinity between the Ossetian declination and the declination in the southern and eastern Caucasianlanguages is reinforced more as there and here there is noaccusative case, contrary to the L.Shegren's and Vs. Miller's opinion.

We are not interested here in the important from the formal-grammatical point of view question of the number of cases, and we leave it open. From our point of view, the questionon the origin of the case inflexionsis also secondary. In our purposes it is enough to point the full typological identity of the Ossetian declination with the declination in the languages of the Georgian and Eastern Mountaineer groups. There and here we have well developed agglutinating declination, and each Ossetian case finds more or less exact typological equivalent in the declination of some of the Caucasian languages with the same semantical meaning and the same syntax function. There and here we find the constant indicator of plurality.2  (I.e. again there is absolutely nothing Iranian)

2 This typological unity is not broken, certainly, by the fact that for some cases of the Georgian and Eastern Mountaineer languages there are no quite adequate matches in the Ossetian.

Lexicon

The Ossetian dictionary, as the other properties of the Ossetian language, until now was the subject of the scientific interest and study almost exclusively in its Iranian part. Falling in the science view in the high time of the Indo-European linguistics, the Ossetian language shares the fate with the other Indo-European languages, as it began to be examined from a single side, as a material for the Indo-European etymologies. In this area has been done a large and fruitful work. By now about 800 Ossetian words were found to have more or less satisfactory Iranian and Indo-European matches. However in the percentage terms this figure not so great, as the number of words (or, better, bases) in the Ossetian is minimally estimated as 4000.1 Hence we have about 20 % of elucidated Indo-European words. To note, this group includes the most important and common categories of words: numerals, pronouns, a number of the most common verbs ("to be", "live", "die", "go", "hold", "allow", "is", etc.), universe terms ("sky", "sun", "moon", "star" and so forth), relations terms, cattle breeder terms, few anatomic terms, etc.

To the number of the "elucidated" words should be added loanwords from the major languages of the Near East Asia: Arabian, Persian, Turkic and Georgian. The number of these also reaches 800 (20 %). Accepting for the remaining somehow "elucidated" words the maximal figure of 400 (another 10 %), we still have about 2000 words remaining , i.e. 50% of the dictionary not touched by the linguistic analysis. A successful and fruitful work, it seems, in further analysis of the Ossetian lexical material is possible only with the following conditions:

It is necessary to widely involve the Caucasian languages, those neighboring with Ossetian, and more remote; ...

In comparative lexical study it is necessary to dump the traditional formula: "either kinship, or loan", for it is already impossible to ignore that mutual relations between languages are much more complex than the above formula and that the amalgamation of languages raises questions which cant be answered with traditional methods.

1This figure is based on the calculation of the lexical materials by Vs. Miller, complemented with our own materials.

The graph illustrates the lexical structure of the Ossetian language verbally described on page 103 of the book, but graphically profoundly missing from the Abaev's book.

For a linguist Abaev to sample, say, 10 or 20 % of the lexicon and count the percentage of lexicon belonging to the professed Iranian, and the other Arabic, Turkic, Kartvellian, Adyg, and Nakh words was a matter of 2-3 days, out of his 40 years-long philological life. That he avoided doing it by all means is screaming about his professional candor.

Amazingly, it is universally accepted in the Indo-European scientific world that the Ossetian language, with 80% non Indo-European lexicon, 100% non Indo-European grammar and 100% non Indo-European morphology, is unquestionably an Indo-European language.

And so the Scythians, and later their linguistic kins Sarmatians, and specifically one of the Sarmatian tribes, the Alans, spoke an Iranian language akin to the uniquely opposed to the all Indo-European languages Ossetian language, which itself consists of 80% of non Indo-European lexicon. A lovely deduction, isn't it? Go figure that mechanics.

Syntaxis

We can touch only very briefly the questions of syntax, owing to their weak development both in Japhetic and in Ossetian, .

Speaking about Ossetian declination, we already pointed to the identity of the syntax functions of Ossetian cases with the corresponding cases in the languages of the S. Caucasian (Georgian., Mengrel) and Eastern Mountaineer groups.

It is possible to note as a general observation the larger rigidity of the Ossetian syntax usually does not admit a change in the word order or replacement of one form with another.

Further, in Ossetian as in the southern and eastern Japhetic languages of Caucasus, instead of the usual in the Indo-European languages of system of pretexts, we find system of postpositions which, usual for the Japhetic languages, demand a genitive case.

Definition is not coordinated with object in number and in case and is always put in indefinite case. I.e., syrx bǽх-tǽ ' bay horses ', instead of syrx-tǽ bax-tǽ.

Definition, however it is expressed, is always ahead of determined object: xury tyn 'sun beam', literally, 'beam of the sun'; the reverse order is completely inconceivable.

We find a similar picture both in neighboring Japhetic languages, and in the languages of the Finnish and Turkic groups. (I.e. again there is absolutely nothing Iranian)

Observed in the Ossetian a tendency to have predicate in the end, and also the tendency to place all the words, describing predicate (definitions etc.) ahead of the predicate, and all words, describing the subject (definitions etc.) in front of the subject, all this in even sharper and mandatory form we find in the Japhetic languages in both eastern and western S. Caucasus .

If to add here such facts, as twenty-based count, then the Ossetian-Japhetic convergences grow into a whole system from which, as from a song, you cannot erase a word. (I.e. again there is absolutely nothing Iranian)

Footnotes

S. Russian steppes became the "S. Russian steppes" only after the conquest in the 16th and the colonization in the 18-19th centuries of the N. Pontic steppes, which were the land of Scythians, Hunno-Bulgars/Khazars and Kipchaks prior to the colonization.

What a way to state that these conclusions are the sole foundation for the Ossetian/Iranian - Scythian/Sarmatian theory.

Japhetic is a long disgraced term advocated by Marr, Abaev's mentor. The clarification given by Abaev explains the intent of using the term, "Japhetic" stands for Caucasus peoples, of Adyg linguistic group (Chechens, Kabardinians, Abkhazes), South Caucasian group (Georgians), North Caucasian group (Avars/Dagestanis). It is a shrewed political way to state that "Japhetic" has nothing to do with the Indo-European and Iranian languages.
