In the Caucasus, tamga used to be one of the most prized possessions, it is a status and respect.
Reportedly, tamgas came to Caucasus in the 14th century, but this is the same kind of manufactured
myths like, for example, the illiteracy of Ossetes before the Russian conquest. The earliest tamgas are
associated with Scythians, who created in the Caucasus a
Koban archeological culture
in symbiosis with the local population. At the turn of the eras Alanian
tribes added to the millew, of which Masguts are known the best, and they brought their tamgas.
In the middle
of the 1st c. AD that symbiosis was complimented with the arrival of the various tribes lead by the Eastern Huns,
who also demonstrated their tamgas as a sign of power, status, and pedigree. The Hunnish leadership
in the middle of the 6th century was replaced by the leadership of the Eastern Huns'
descendent Western Türkic Kaganate,
and its descendent Khazar Kaganate. At a minimum, the Caucasus tamga cultural tradition continues uninterrupted from the 7th c. BC.
It seems that Caucasus family names have a similar fate with other Türkic peoples, the traditional verbal genealogy extending for seven generations was replaced in 1850es within the Russian-controlled zone by a pasportization system, where all non-serf people were assigned a Russian/Russified last name and a passport. The names were typically derived from an elder member in the family, like a grandpa, or given by location or a name of a local feudal, in the last case a whole village ended up carrying the same name and producing a multitude of, say, Romanovs. The first category carries the traditional names of the past centuries. Occasionally they also reflect a provenance of the family progenitor, or unconventional religious affiliation, like Urus/Rus, Masgut, or Islam, Muhhamad, etc. Fairly frequent are the status names, like Bai/Bek - lords, Baichor - pauper, Bulan - army soldier. Some of the names may be derived from a clan designation, in those cases the clan's tamga serves as a base, and is modified for individual families. |

Traditional tidbits If after several girls a boy was born in a family, a family tamga and a depiction of a right hand of the child were added to the clan slab. On an occasion of a birth of a first boy, an uncle on the maternal side presented a stallion with a family tamga on right shoulder blade. The clan heraldry of famous hunters were displayed at the celebrations revering the God of hunting Apsaty, and the koshars (sheep corrals) and springs were decorated with the family tamgas.
