Translator's Notes

Page numbers, where shown, indicate pages in the book publication. The offered copy of the printed edition may still contain some typos and misspellings. The posting is representative of the general scope and the detail of the annals.

The “mouse over“ explanations basically follow the definitions found in the Annals and represent the views of the writers, which may be different from the known or accepted conditions of the present time. They are the best guess and some of them may be incorrect because of incorrect interpretation of the text  by the translator. The translator of the Annals to Russian left a multitude of the Türkisms in his translation, and they are preserved in the English translation, with the mouse over explanations where available. The dates in the chapter headings are added during translation and are imprecise indicators of the period covered.

Historical Background

Sultan Sulayman al-Kanuni, the Lawgiver (the Magnificent) 1522-1566 brought the al-Dawlat al-‘Uthmaniyyah (Ottoman Empire) to the zenith of cultural, religious and political prestige, and territorial possessions. His rule lasted from 1520 to 1566 and he was a contemporary of the Bulgarian Shah Ali Khan (1518-1521), Sahib Girai Khan (1521-1525), Safa Girai Khan (1525-1549), Jan 'Ali Khan (1532-1535), Utemish Girai Khan (1549-1551), Yadiger Mohammed Khan (1552), Hapsburg Empire's Charles V, England’s King Henry VIII and France’s King Francis I.

Sulayman the Lawgiver promulgated secular laws that held together multi-ethnic and multi-religious population of the Ottoman Empire. He was surrounded by able advisers, most notably Ibrahim Pasha (Greek) and Mehmed Pasha Sokolović (Serb). Sulayman was a deeply religious man who held fast to his Islamic beliefs. Among innumerable civic works were several great mosques that still stand today.

The Sultan last campaign against undisciplined and marauding soldiers of the Christian Europe secured a century and a half of peace and prosperity in the region.

LETTER OF KUL-ASHRAF TO TURKISH SULTAN SULEIMAN KANUNI

152

In this letter of Kul-Ashraf, the Turkish sultan is called “Great master, my brother“ (apparently, letter was located in the beginning of the collection, judging from the text of A.M.-K.Nigmatullin).

Seal of seid-emir in a form of two squares, one inside another. Inscription in the inner square: “Seid - emir righteous Kul-Ashraf ibn Yusuf“, in the outer square: “There is no God except for the God, and Muhammad is a messenger of God. A just is reigning, an oppressor is perishing“.

The letter says:

“We learned that news reached you about some disorders in the Kazan vilaet of our state. They happened because of few traitors who took advantage of our temporary indisposition. But now, praised be the Almighty, the culprits fell under deserved punishment, and by our efforts the situation in vilaet is recovering. Therefore a need for those measures about which you, worrying about our situation, kindly wrote to us, has disappeared. In addition, the inals of that province possess a right to elect a governor, and it would be risky to break this ancient rule...

However, wild Kypchaks led by the old thief Ismail pressed again in our viceroy in Astarhan, and we would be glad if you would order Azaks to help our Khan. From our part, we would send there people, and it would be great if they would meet in Behtash... Besides that, we would involve in this affair our loyal biy Yusuf, though he is now in cumbersome position. After the the end of the affair, Azaks could rest in the Gazan, the hospitality of its inhabitants is widely known. A stay of your people in that city would strengthen even more the friendship between our subjects... With the help of the Creator, we continuously and for many years protect that city from the infidels excusively for the safety of your possession in the Azan and Crimea. And we could live in perfect safety in other, better fortified and inaccessible to the enemies places, we have many cities. But your friendship and brotherhood between us is more dear for us...“

Date shown by Islamic calendar.
