Introduction

The appearance of the Alans in the Ferdausi (ca 936-1026) Sahname from the very start determines their Turanian character within the epic. Tur (Av. Tura-) is the eponym of the Turanians, the legendary enemies of the Persians. The ethnic base of the data, passed on from the ancient Avestic tradition, in the eyes of the Persians in the Sasanian period identified the term Turan with the Abdels (Hephthalites) and Türkic nomads from the North-East of Persia, the Alans are one of the steppe people.
